The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society is excited to announce its upcoming Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 16, 2023, and program titled “Callaway Characters.” The event will feature the stories of four fascinating characters, with one told through a narrative and three portrayed by performers.

Miss Willie, Hugh P. Williamson, Jesse James, and Eliza Harper Haycraft are the four individuals whose stories will be showcased at the event. Each of them has left a mark on the county’s history, contributing their own unique blend of mystery, dignity, adventure, scandal, flavor, and humor.

The Importance of Preserving Gravestones

A class on cemetery preservation and tombstone cleaning was offered as part of the spring 2022 Lifelong Learning series. Two hours of classroom presentations with questions and answers were followed by hands-on time at Hillcrest Cemetery in Fulton for stone cleaning. We thought we should share some of the basic Dos and Don’ts for cemetery preservation. With the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, many people will visit cemeteries to honor and remember lost family and friends.

New Learning Opportunity from Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society This Spring

How did quilting connect with the Underground Railroad? What was cooking like for people in Callaway County in the 1800s? Residents of Fulton and Callaway County interested in learning more about local history have a new opportunity from the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society (KCHS) this spring. KCHS will offer three “Triple L (Lifelong Learning)” workshops from March through May 2022 on a variety of topics with local historical importance.
