The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society is excited to announce its upcoming Annual Meeting on Sunday, April 16, 2023, and program titled “Callaway Characters.” The event will feature the stories of four fascinating characters, with one told through a narrative and three portrayed by performers.

Miss Willie, Hugh P. Williamson, Jesse James, and Eliza Harper Haycraft are the four individuals whose stories will be showcased at the event. Each of them has left a mark on the county’s history, contributing their own unique blend of mystery, dignity, adventure, scandal, flavor, and humor.

The portrayal of these characters by Carmen Brandt, Bryce Gordon, Joe Holt, and Debby Thompson is sure to be the highlight of the afternoon. Attendees can expect to be transported back in time as these talented performers breathe life into the stories of Callaway’s most interesting and notorious characters.

The event will be hosted by KCHS President Susan Krumm, who will also read short vignettes about other Callaway County “characters.” The program promises to be a fun and engaging way to remember the stories of the county’s residents.

The event will also feature the recognition of the 2023 KCHS award recipients. The selection of these outstanding individuals continues the tradition set in 2020 during the society’s 60th anniversary. The Annual Meeting program will be an opportunity for attendees to help honor these exceptional Callawegians.

The Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society has a long-standing reputation for preserving and celebrating the county’s rich history. The society’s commitment to this mission is reflected in its diverse range of programs and events, which continue to engage and inspire both visitors and locals.

Attendees are invited to enjoy the catered luncheon from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for $25 per person. If you plan to attend the luncheon, RSVP by April 7 to 573-642-0570 or museum@callawaymohistory.org. The business meeting and awards recognition will be held immediately following the luncheon, with the program following after.

With an exciting lineup of characters and performers, the Annual Meeting promises to be a fun-filled afternoon of entertainment and education. Attendees can expect to leave with a greater appreciation for the county’s rich and colorful past.
