Court Street — Residential View Looking North

Court Street looking north by First Baptist Church present day.

This postcard is another of those printed in Germany for C. A. Patton. Without reading the label at the top of the card, today’s viewer might find it hard to identify its location on Court Street.  Of the three buildings pictured, only one, the First Presbyterian Church (on the right), remains.   On the left side of the card, Court Street United Methodist Church still occupies the same area as the Methodist Church in the picture.  The residence in the foreground was located in what is now the northern corner of the First Baptist Church parking lot.

The house belonged to the family of Dr. J. J. Brown, Sr. (For anyone who might remember a Dr. Brown, you are likely thinking of his son, Dr. John Brown, Jr., the elder Dr. Brown having  given up the practice of medicine when he discovered selling railroad ties was more lucrative!) Ann Brown, the third daughter of Dr. Brown, Sr., married Elmer Henderson in 1903 and their son, Elmer Henderson, Jr. was one of the architects of the present Callaway County Courthouse.

The top picture (postcard) was taken some time between 1898 and 1907.
