Court Street Looking South

Court Street looking south then and present day.

Stretching from Memorial Park, passing by the Callaway County Court House and Brick District businesses on to four of the largest churches in the city, and ending in a historic residential district, Court Street is perhaps the best-known street in Fulton. This postcard looks south from the residential area graced by many lovely historic homes. Early postcards often featured residential scenes, but, unfortunately, as in this example, the viewer saw little besides the street and the trees that bordered it.

Years ago, on Sunday mornings, the young ladies from Synodical College walked down the east side of Court Street on their way to the First Presbyterian Church. Their counterparts from William Woods (then) College preferred the west side of the street as they journeyed to worship at the First Christian Church. Of course, all the young ladies hoped to catch the eye of a Westminster man proceeding along 7th Street to Sunday services.

Perhaps on a sunny spring afternoon, you might like to stroll down Court Street to discover the exact location of the postcard and the photo. It took us a while to identify it! Here’s a hint: You’ll have better luck if you follow the path of the young ladies from William Woods.
