Discover the Rich History of Callaway County's Rural and Historical Schoolhouses
Join us on an exciting journey of our beloved Callaway County rural and historical schoolhouses. It's a chance to step back in time, pay a visit, and capture a moment with a selfie at some of the remaining iconic buildings or sites. As we prepare for the much-anticipated release of KCHS's latest book, Callaway Chalkboards: Remembering Callaway County’s Rural Schoolhouses, we invite you to embark on an exciting Scavenger Hunt!
Scavenger Hunt Instructions:
Obtain Your Packet: Pick up a Scavenger Hunt packet at one of the KCHS locations or download here.
Explore the Schoolhouses: Visit one, a few, or all of the ten official rural schoolhouses selected. The packet provides you with directions and brief histories of each site, allowing you to gain insights into their educational legacy.
Capture the Moment: Take a photo of yourself or your team as instructed in the packet at each site.
Submit Your Selfies:
Facebook: Upload your photo(s) to KCHS Facebook page at "Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society" and include your name/team name.
Email: Send your photo(s) to KCHS at museum@callawaymohistory.org with "Scavenger Hunt Photo" in the subject line. Please include your name or team name in the text area.
In Person: Bring your photos to Kelly or Nancy at the KCHS Museum, located at 513 Court Street in Fulton.
Submit Your Selfies: Even if you don't visit all the sites, we encourage you to submit your selfies/photos. We're excited to see where people choose to explore!
Drawing: For those adventurers who visit ALL 10 sites and have their photos authenticated by KCHS, your names will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three fantastic prizes. The drawing will take place on November 5, 2023, at the Book Release and Pie Supper.
Prizes:
1st Winner: $100 cash and a complimentary copy of Callaway Chalkboards.
2nd Winner: $75 cash and a complimentary copy of Callaway Chalkboards.
3rd Winner: $50 cash and a complimentary copy of Callaway Chalkboards.
Tour Locations:
Central Callaway: Brown School, Fulton; and Carver School, Fulton
North Callaway: Truitt School, Stephens (now AME Church); and Flint School/Walnut Grove, Hatton
East Callaway: Williamsburg School and Calwood School (now Calwood Community Center)
South Callaway: Muir School, New Bloomfield; and Herbert King Colored School, Portland
West Callaway: Middle River School, southwest of Fulton; and Millersburg School
Timeline: You have the entire month of October to complete the tour and submit your selfies. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, October 31st, at midnight.
