New Learning Opportunity from Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society This Spring

How did quilting connect with the Underground Railroad? What was cooking like for people in Callaway County in the 1800s? Residents of Fulton and Callaway County interested in learning more about local history have a new opportunity from the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society (KCHS) this spring. KCHS will offer three “Triple L (Lifelong Learning)” workshops from March through May 2022 on a variety of topics with local historical importance.

The KCHS spring 2022 Triple L workshops will include the following:

  • Session 1: “Quilts, Music and the Underground Railroad” will discuss the relationship between quilt patterns, spirituals, and the history of the Underground Railroad during the two-week sessions held March 21 and 28.

  • Session 2: “Grandma’s Cooking” will discuss methods of cooking from the Civil War to present while sampling dishes from the 1800s, the Depression, and more modern fare during the two-week sessions held April 4 and 11.

  • Session 3: “Care and Cleaning of Gravestones” is a one-day workshop on May 3 about methods of properly cleaning gravestones and includes a field trip to a local cemetery to practice. Lunch will be provided.

KCHS Triple L sessions will be held at the KCHS Research Center, 106 East 4th Street, Fulton, MO 65251, and pre-registration is required. A $25 registration fee covers one or all sessions. KCHS members receive a discount of $5 off the registration fee. Seats are limited. Participants can register at www.callawaymohistory.org/triple-l or by calling (573) 642-0570 or emailing museum@callawaymohistory.org.

“These classes have been in the works for quite a while,” said KCHS Museum Director Nancy Lewis. “We are excited to finally get the opportunity for our instructors to share their knowledge of history with the community. We are hopeful to offer sessions on new topics in the fall.”
